Writing Tutoring

Writing

The best writing is rewriting.” EB White

"If all we can ever know comes filtered through the lens of our own experience, and if we are readers, some part of our very selves will be the result of what we have read—this is obvious enough. Good writers not only have read widely and deeply, but they continue to do so—not in order to be better writers, but because for them the act of reading is as inseparable from living as writing is." Carl Philips

I wish students would take seriously the advice about writing. No matter how hard, no matter how much of a struggle it is, this is the single most important thing they will do in college. Those who have made the point that good writers are good readers and good readers are good writers hit the nail on the head. Students, nothing makes your professor happier than a well expressed idea.

The Tutors

Writing tutors offer assistance and guidance in academic and creative writing. The goal is to help students achieve academic success and satisfaction through improved writing skills. Tutors support students in creating well-conceived, well-written and thoroughly vetted papers. Tutors assist students who have basic issues and questions, as well as those students interested in enhancing their skills.

The Working Relationship

Writing tutors do not create the work for the student but discuss method and identify areas where students need to focus and strengthen their skill set. Tutors guide, suggest, and question -- they teach rather than do. The doing is the job and the privilege of the student.  A successful tutor-student relationship allows the student to realize her or his potential as a writer and feel confident that independently she or he can produce quality and inspired academic work.
